Missouri River Authorized Purposes Study (MRAPS)
Scoping Meeting July 30, 2010 at Yankton, SD Riverfront Center.

This 30 1/8 inch Walleye was caught on Saturday, May 23rd, on Lake Sharpe by Wendy Galloway. The Missouri River Authorized Purposes Study is a twenty-five million dollar five year broad based Congressional authorized study to review the project purposes established by the Flood Control Act of 1944.

The Study will analyze the eight authorized purposes in view of current Missouri River Basin values and priorities to determine if changes to the purposes and existing Federal water resource infrastructure may be warranted.

The eight authorized purposes include:
Flood Control Navigation
Irrigation Hydropower
Water Supply Water Quality
Recreation Fish and Wildlife

The United States Army Corps of Engineers will work collaboratively with Tribes, Federal, and State agencies and other Stakeholders within the Basin and along the Mississippi River to seek input using a variety of communication tools. Your comments, suggestions, and recommendations are welcomed on these purposes and Study.

Public Scoping Meetings are being held throughout the Missouri River Basin. The next meeting in South Dakota is July 30, 2010 in Yankton at the Riverfront Center 5:00 to 8:00 pm. 5:00 to 7:00 pm stations for each of the authorized purposes will have persons available to speak with individuals. 7:00 to 8:00 pm a microphone will be made available individuals to openly make their comments to the Study group.

For more information or to send your comments on this study visit www.mraps.org. It is essential that our congressional delegates know that we as citizens, outdoors enthusiasts, and members of SDWU want the process to be open, meaningful, accountable, and transparent. The process must be open to all stakeholders and the Corps must provide several opportunities for the various stakeholders to participate.

Currently, some individuals are trying to defund the process, so please write to our congressional delegates and encourage them to continue this process.
